Flea and tick prevention vs treatment - what is best for your dog?

When it comes to the health of a family member, including your pets, prevention is often better than treatment. Why wait for fleas, ticks and other parasites to cause discomfort, potentially spread disease, and become more challenging to deal with once they take hold? By choosing proactive, preventative care, you can protect your dog whilst also saving time and money.

Parasite Prevention or Treatment: what’s the difference?

Preventative Care

  • Preventative care focuses on preventing infestations before they happen.
  • Using products, like Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On, that kill fleas and ticks can provide ongoing protection when used regularly.
  • It helps keep your dog comfortable, healthy, and free of irritation.

Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On is a veterinary medicine available without prescription that kills fleas and ticks. When applied monthly, it provides your dog with continuous protection against fleas and ticks.

Reactive care or treatment

  • Reactive care involves treating your dog once an infestation has already been established. If your pet has fleas, the ones you see are only 5% of a flea infestation. The other 95% is in your home, and comprises flea eggs, larvae and pupae. Without intervention, all these life stages will develop into adult fleas and keep the cycle of infestation going. Reactive treatment will require treating the home as well as your pet.
  • It also means your dog is already suffering with fleas, which will be irritating and uncomfortable for them. In some cases, flea problems may require veterinary intervention, which may cause your dog further distress.
  • Reactive treatment may also be costly and take considerable time to get under control, especially if fleas have infested your home. Flea infestations can take up to 3 months to resolve in the home.
  • Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On is a dog flea treatment which will treat an active flea problem. It starts killing fleas within 24 hours and provides continuous protection when applied every 4 weeks.

Benefits of preventative flea and tick treatment

  1.  Protect your dog’s health

Fleas and ticks are more than just a nuisance. They can transmit serious illnesses to your dog, such as:

  • Tapeworms (via fleas)
  • Lyme disease (via ticks)

Using preventative treatments regularly can help reduce these health risks, and avoid both your home and pet becoming infested.

  1. Save time and money

Treating flea and tick infestations requires more effort and resources than preventative treatment, including:

  • Deep cleaning your home to eliminate flea eggs and larvae. This includes washing all pet bedding at 60°C and treating the home with a home flea product, such as Beaphar FLEAtec Household Spray, which contains both an insecticide and an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR). This will not only kill adult fleas but prevent the flea eggs and larvae from developing, helping to stop a flea infestation in its tracks. It can take up to 3 months to remove an infestation from your home.
  • Veterinary visits may be required should parasites cause serious discomfort to your dog.

Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On provides vet-strength, monthly flea and tick protection that is tough on parasites, kind on your wallet.

  1. Avoid discomfort for your dog

Scratching, skin irritation, and infections are common consequences of fleas and ticks. Proactive, preventative care helps keep your dog happy and itch-free.

What should I do if my dog has fleas?

Sometimes flea infestations happen despite your best efforts. But if you detect fleas, here are some steps you can take to fight an infestation:

  • Treat your dog immediately using a veterinary medicine proven to kill fleas, like Beaphar FIPROtec® Spot-On.
  • Deep clean your home. Vacuum thoroughly, wash all pet bedding at 60°C and use Beaphar FLEAtec Household Spray to disrupt the parasite lifecycle. With both an insecticide and an insect growth regulator, Beaphar FLEAtec Household Spray not only kills adult fleas, but prevents the development of flea eggs and larvae.
  • Ensure all pets in the household are treated at the same time to help reduce the risk of reinfestation from other cats and dogs.
  • Consult your vet if the infestation persists or worsens despite your efforts.
